Short answer: no. Shopify does not schedule inventory updates natively.
There's no field in the admin where you set a quantity for a future moment. No "restock at midnight" button. No way to flip a variant from sold out to available on a timer. When the time comes, you open the product, type the new number, and save it yourself.
Which is fine at noon. Less fine at 12:00 AM on a drop night.
Let me walk through exactly what Shopify does and doesn't do here, then how to get the scheduled behavior you actually want.
What Shopify does natively (and where it stops)
Shopify's inventory tools are solid for the present tense. You can set stock per variant and per location, adjust quantities, track committed and available amounts, and turn "continue selling when out of stock" on or off. All of that works well when you're doing it live.
The gap is time. Every one of those changes happens the second you hit save. There is no future date attached to an inventory edit.
So these are the things Shopify can't do on its own:
- Schedule a quantity to appear later. You can't tell Shopify "put 200 units of this variant live Friday at 10 AM." You have to be there to type 200.
- Schedule a restock time. Same problem. A sold-out variant stays sold out until a human changes the number.
- Schedule a stock policy change. Flipping "continue selling when out of stock" for a preorder window or a hard cutoff is a manual toggle, both directions.
- Auto-revert after a window. No native way to say "run at 50 units, then set it back to 0 when the flash sale ends."
To be fair to Shopify: it does schedule some things. A product can be set to go live on a future date through its Online Store availability. Discounts have real start and end times. But inventory isn't on that list, and neither is a restock. Those are manual.
If you're on Shopify Plus, Launchpad can schedule some store events. It is Plus-only, though. On Basic, Shopify, or Advanced, Launchpad isn't an option, so inventory scheduling still lands on you.
Why merchants want scheduled inventory in the first place
A few patterns come up over and over. See if any of these are yours.
The drop. You're holding stock back until launch. You want 200 units to go live at an exact minute, not whenever you happen to wake up and log in.
The flash restock. Limited quantity, limited window. Put 50 units out at 8 PM, let them sell, and close it off when the window ends so you don't oversell the next day.
The preorder cutoff. You're selling beyond stock during a preorder using "continue selling when out of stock." When the cutoff hits, you need that policy flipped back to off so real inventory rules apply again.
The timezone problem. Your busiest customers are three time zones away. You want inventory to move on their clock, not because you set an alarm for 2 AM your time.
None of these are exotic. They're just normal retail timing that Shopify makes you babysit by hand.
How to schedule inventory updates with an app
This is the gap Schedule It was built to close. It runs store changes on a timer, server-side, at an exact date and time. No browser open. No you at the keyboard.
For inventory specifically, you can schedule:
- Quantity changes per variant and per location. Set an absolute number (set to 200) or a delta (add 50, remove 25). Target the exact location that's fulfilling.
- Stock policy changes. Turn "continue selling when out of stock" on or off on a schedule, so preorder windows open and close on their own.
- Variant enable or disable, if you'd rather pull a variant entirely instead of zeroing it.
Set the run time and walk away. The change fires at the minute you picked.
The part that saves the most cleanup is auto-revert. Set an end time and the change rolls back to its previous state automatically. Put 50 units out for a two-hour window, and Schedule It sets it back to 0 when the window closes. You don't log in twice.
Chain the inventory change with the rest of the launch. One automation can publish the product, set the price, start a discount, and load the inventory at the same second. That's the point of scheduling: the whole drop moves together instead of you clicking through five screens live.
You also get retries if Shopify throws a transient error (up to 20 attempts), full execution logs with timestamps and the Shopify request id, and email alerts to your team on completion or failure. If something goes sideways at midnight, you know without checking.
It works on every Shopify plan, Basic included. No Plus required. You can run up to 5 active automations on the Free plan with the core inventory, pricing, product, and discount actions, and step up to more on a paid plan. See the features or pricing if you want the full list.
Putting it together
Here's the honest summary. Shopify handles inventory well in the moment and schedules a few other things like product go-live and discounts. It does not schedule inventory. For a restock time, a timed quantity, or a policy flip that reverts itself, you need an app to run it for you.
If you're already scheduling launches, this fits right in. Pairing a timed restock with a scheduled product publish is a common combo. Our guide on how to schedule products in Shopify covers that side, and the best Shopify apps for product scheduling compares the options if you're weighing tools.
Set the quantity. Set the time. Walk away.
