Short answer first: you do not need Shopify Plus to schedule products. That belief usually comes from hearing about Launchpad, the Plus-only scheduling tool. Launchpad is real, but it is not the only way to put a launch on a timer. Most of what you actually need already lives in your admin, and an app covers the rest on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced.
Let's split it into what Shopify does for free, what it does not, and how to close that gap without touching your plan.
What Shopify already schedules on any plan
Two things work natively on every plan, no upgrade required.
Products going live. Open a product, find the Online Store availability under the sales channel section, and choose to schedule availability. Pick a future date and time, save, and Shopify publishes that product to the channel at that moment. It runs on your store's timezone, set under Settings > General. This is built in on Basic. If someone told you scheduled product publishing is a Plus feature, they were wrong.
Discounts. Both code discounts and automatic discounts have a start date and time and an optional end date and time right in the admin. Shopify turns them on and off for you. No app needed for a single scheduled discount.
So if your entire plan is "publish this one product Friday at 9am," Shopify handles it. Set it and walk away. For a full walkthrough, see how to schedule products in Shopify.
Where the native tools stop
Here is the honest part. Native scheduling is thin. It covers the happy path and nothing around it.
- No scheduled unpublish. Shopify schedules a product going live. There is no native end time to pull it back down. When a drop sells out or a window closes, you do it by hand.
- No bulk publish. It is one product at a time. Thirty products going live together means thirty date pickers set individually.
- No coordination. The native product schedule does not fire a price change, a discount, or an announcement bar at the same instant. Each piece is its own manual step, and they have to line up.
- Collections are not scheduled. Products get a date picker. Collections do not have the equivalent in the standard admin. There is no "publish this collection Friday at midnight" setting. You build it, leave it unpublished, and flip it live yourself. More on that in can you schedule collections in Shopify.
- Inventory is not scheduled. No native way to set a restock quantity or a stock policy change for a future time.
- Themes and announcement bars are not scheduled on standard plans.
None of this means Shopify is broken. It means the native feature schedules the single act of a product appearing, not the whole launch around it.
This is the gap Launchpad fills, and where an app comes in
Launchpad is the Plus tool that coordinates a store event: publishing products and collections, theme changes, and discounts firing together on a schedule. It is genuinely useful. It is also locked to Plus, which starts far above what most stores pay.
You do not need to buy your way up the plan ladder to get that behavior. An app does the coordination on the plan you already have. Schedule It runs store changes on a timer, server-side, at an exact date and time, on every Shopify plan including Basic. It is a Launchpad alternative for stores that are not on Plus.
What that looks like in practice:
- Bulk and unpublish. Publish or unpublish products to a chosen sales channel on a schedule, including the end time Shopify leaves out. Set an end time and the change auto-reverts to its previous state.
- Coordinated launches. Chain several actions into one automation so a product publish, a price change, a discount, and an announcement bar all fire together. That is the piece native scheduling cannot do.
- The stuff with no native scheduler. Inventory quantity and stock policy per variant and location, theme publish, announcement bar on and off with no theme code, metafields, tags, and page locks for gating individual pages behind a password.
- Reliability you can check. Automatic retries on transient Shopify errors up to 20 times, full execution logs with status, timestamp, and Shopify request id, and email alerts to up to 10 people on completion, failure, or revert.
You can build recurring campaigns once as templates and reuse them. See the full Features list for the exact actions.
Launchpad also handles Shopify Scripts, which are a Plus-only checkout customization. An app does not replace that specific piece. For scheduling product publishes, discounts, inventory, themes, and bars, a non-Plus store gets the parts that matter for a launch.
The practical setup for a non-Plus store
Here is the plan that keeps you off the plan-upgrade path:
- Simple, single, on-time? Use native. One product live at 9am, or one discount with a start and end date. No app, no cost.
- A real launch with moving parts? Use an app. Bulk publishes, an end time, a price change and bar firing together, inventory or theme changes. Build one automation, test it, walk away.
- Test before the real date. Whatever you use, schedule a throwaway run a day early and confirm it fired. Midnight is a bad time to discover a typo.
Schedule It has a Free plan with up to 5 active automations covering pricing, products, discounts, and inventory, so you can prove the workflow before spending anything. See pricing for the rest. No credit card to install.
