Your homepage has a featured collection section. This week it shows the summer edit. Next week you want it on the new arrivals. The week after, a clearance rack. You want that swap to happen on a timer, not because you were at the keyboard on Sunday night remembering to change it.

That is collection rotation. And Shopify does not have a native button for it. Let me be straight about what the platform gives you, what it doesn't, and how to make the swap run on its own.

What Shopify does and doesn't do here

Products have a scheduled availability date built in. You can set a product to go live on the online store at a future date and time, and Shopify publishes it for you on the store's timezone.

Collections do not get that same picker. There is no native Schedule availability setting on a collection in the standard admin. You can build a collection and leave it unpublished, but publishing it at go-live is a manual click. There is no "publish this collection Friday at midnight" toggle sitting in the admin waiting for you.

Rotation is a second layer on top of that. Rotation isn't just publishing a collection once. It's changing which collection your homepage features, on a repeating schedule, and often taking last week's feature back down. Native Shopify has nothing for that on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plans.

Note

Launchpad can schedule collection publishing and store events, but it is a Shopify Plus only tool. If you're not on Plus, it isn't an option. Everything below works on every plan.

The two honest ways to rotate

There are really two mechanics here. Pick based on how your homepage is built.

Method one: swap what a fixed section points to. Your theme's featured collection section is set to one collection. To rotate, you go into the theme editor and change that section to point at a different collection. It's a manual edit every time you want a new feature.

Method two: control which products are live so a smart collection fills or empties. Instead of touching the theme, you keep several automated collections or a menu that surfaces them, and you control which products land inside. Publish the products (or add the tag) for the collection you want featured, and unpublish the products (or clear the sale tag) on the one you're retiring so it empties out. This is the cleaner path if your storefront surfaces automated collections. Emptying a smart collection isn't identical to unpublishing the collection page, but if nothing shows and you don't link an empty collection in navigation, the feature is effectively gone.

Both work. Both are manual by default. Doing either one by hand every week is the babysitting you're trying to escape.

The workaround with pure Shopify

If you want to stay fully native, here's the honest version.

  1. Build every collection you plan to rotate through ahead of time. Use automated collections with tag rules so products fall in on their own.
  2. Leave the ones you aren't featuring yet unpublished.
  3. When it's time to rotate, publish the next collection and unpublish the current one by hand.
  4. If your homepage section is pinned to a specific collection, open the theme editor and repoint it.

This is real and it works. The catch is step three and four happen when you do them. Miss Sunday night and the summer edit sits on your homepage into the new week. There's no revert and no timer. You are the timer.

That's fine for an occasional seasonal change. For a weekly featured drop, doing it by hand gets old fast.

The app path: set the rotation once

This is where a scheduler earns its keep. Schedule It runs store changes server-side at an exact date and time, so the swap fires whether or not you're online.

For rotation, you lean on a few of its actions:

  • Product publish and unpublish to a chosen sales channel, scheduled to the minute.
  • Product tags on a schedule, which reshuffles what lands in an automated collection.
  • Auto-revert: set an end time and the change rolls back to its previous state on its own.
  • Multi-action automations: chain a collection's products going live with a price change and an announcement bar so the whole feature turns on together.

A practical setup for a weekly featured drop: schedule next week's products to publish Monday at 6am and this week's to unpublish at the same moment. If your automated collections are keyed on tags, schedule a tag change instead and let the collection rebuild itself. Save a template for it so next month's rotation is a two-minute copy, not a rebuild.

Then you walk away. It runs on your store's timezone, retries on transient Shopify errors, and logs every execution with a status and timestamp. You can point completion and failure email alerts at up to ten people, so the team knows the Monday swap landed without anyone checking.

Tip

If your homepage feature is a menu link or a collection list rather than one pinned section, control which products are live. Schedule It publishes and unpublishes products on a timer, so an automated collection fills up or empties out on cue. That's the rotation, no theme edits.

Schedule It works on every Shopify plan including Basic, so this is the Launchpad alternative for stores that aren't on Plus. It's free for up to 5 active automations. If you're rotating weekly and want templates, the Growth plan runs $9.99 a month. See pricing for the full breakdown, or read how to schedule collections in Shopify for the single-swap version of this.

Set it once. Walk away.
