Here is a thing that trips people up. Shopify gives products a built-in publish date, so a lot of merchants assume collections work the same way. They do not.

When you open a collection in the Shopify admin, there is no calendar to say "make this go live Friday at midnight." You can publish a collection or unpublish it, but there is no native scheduled publish sitting next to that toggle. So if you have been looking for that setting and cannot find it, you are not missing anything. It is not there.

This guide covers the honest options: what you can do with Shopify alone, and how to actually schedule a collection when you need it timed to the minute.

Why collections have no built-in schedule

Products and collections look similar in the admin, but Shopify only built the scheduled publish date into products. A collection has a published state, on or off, and you flip it manually.

That is fine for a collection you build once and leave up. It is a problem when the collection is the star of a launch, like a new season, a holiday edit, or a limited drop that needs to appear at an exact time and then come down.

The manual workarounds people use

Without an app, there are two common ways merchants handle a timed collection. Both work, and both have a catch.

Build it early and hide it. Create the collection ahead of time, add the products, and leave it unpublished. When the go-live moment arrives, you open the admin and publish it by hand. The catch is obvious. Someone has to be awake and online at that minute, which is rough for a midnight launch or a sale that starts while you are asleep.

Use an automated collection with conditions. An automated collection pulls in any product that matches a rule, like a specific tag. If you pair that with Shopify's scheduled product publish date, products appear in the collection as they go live. The catch is that this controls the products, not the collection itself, and it only helps if your whole strategy is tag-based.

Heads up

The "publish it manually at midnight" plan is where launches quietly fail. A late night, a missed alarm, or a slow connection turns a timed drop into a drop that went live twenty minutes late. If timing matters, take the human out of the moment.

Schedule the collection itself

Shopify's admin keeps the collection's published toggle manual, but Schedule It schedules it directly, on every plan:

  1. Install Schedule It and create a new automation.
  2. Add a "Publish collection" action, pick the collection, and pick the sales channels it should appear on.
  3. Set the start time for the moment it should go live.
  4. Optional: add an end time, and the collection unpublishes on its own when the window closes.
  5. Add the product publishes to the same automation so the collection page has its contents the moment it appears.
  6. Save it and walk away.

At the start time the collection page goes live and the products publish with it, all in the same server-side event.

Or schedule a collection to fill on its own

There is a second pattern worth knowing for tag-driven stores: let the products control the collection. It pairs well with the direct publish, and for evergreen collections that stay published it is all you need.

  1. Build the collection as a smart, automated collection with a tag condition, like "products tagged summer-drop." Leave the products themselves unpublished for now.
  2. In Schedule It, add a product publish action, or a tag action that adds the sale tag, for the products that belong in the collection.
  3. Set the start time for when they should go live.
  4. Add an end time that unpublishes those products or removes the tag, so the collection empties after the launch.

At the start time, the products publish and the tag goes on, so the smart collection fills on its own at that exact minute. At the end time, the products come down or the tag comes off, and the collection empties. You are not in the admin at midnight, and nothing stays up past the window you set.

Emptying a smart collection is not the same as unpublishing the collection page, and Schedule It handles both: empty the contents through products and tags, unpublish the page itself with a scheduled collection action, or do the two together so the sale disappears completely.

Tip

Chain the products with the rest of the launch in one automation. The products publish and the collection fills, an announcement bar switches on, and a discount starts, all at the same minute. When the sale ends, every piece reverts together.

Because Schedule It runs on all Shopify plans, you can time a collection without moving to Shopify Plus. There is also a free plan, so you can test the exact timing on a throwaway product and tag before the real launch.

The short version

Shopify schedules products, not collections. If you only need to publish a collection once and leave it, the manual toggle is fine. If the collection has to go live at an exact time, or go live and then come down, schedule it with an app so the timing does not depend on you being awake.
